MUNICIPALITY of CHANIA

A dynamic municipality with development activities in the business and financial sector along with rich history and culture. The capital of Chania is the second largest city of Crete and is built on the site of Cydonia, a Minoan settlement. The Municipality of Chania after the implementation of "Kallikrates" project includes today the former municipalities of Akrotiri, El.Venizelos, Ceramia, New Cydonia, Therisos, Souda and Chania.

Its administrative boundaries include the port of Souda and Chania Airport connecting Western Crete with mainland Greece and numerous destinations both in Greece and abroad.

The Municipality of Chania ranks first in Greek vacations preferences, however it is also an attraction for thousands of tourists from around the globe. The picturesque city of Chania consists significant added value, with the covered municipal market, its large beaches with crystal clear waters and historic sites, such as the tombs of the Venizelos family in Akrotiri and the home of the national leader Eleftherios Venizelos in Therissos.

Akrotiri Region

In Akrotiri tourists can see the tombs of the Venizelos, the headquarters of the National Revolution, the airport and the port of Souda. Akrotiri is the place of nature paths, canyons with different virgin nature aspects, full of natural beauties and living traditions.

Eleftherios Venizelos Region

It is worth visiting the old village of Mournia and admire the house of Eleftherios Venizelos. There are also churches such St. George in Nerokourou, Agios Eleftherios and the Great Lavra Church as well as St. John in Valleniana but also the Minoan Villa in Nerokourou, which are remarkably interesting.

Ceramia Region

In the Municipal section of Ceramia it is worth visiting the canyons of Diktamos and Aletrouvariou, both of rare natural beauty. In the village called Plativola one can visit the homonymous cave which is one of the greatest of Crete. There are many Byzantine churches in the municipality, such as St. John in Gerolakos, St. George in Malaxa and many more. From the area of Malaxa, you can enjoy the panoramic view of Chania.

New Cydonia region

A region with rich historical and cultural heritage. One of the greatest battles of World War II was performed in Galata, whereas, many historical and cultural events are taking place involving veterans. Finally, the beaches of the Western unity of New Cydonia, host the reproduction of the sea turtle Caretta-Caretta.

Therisos Region

Due to its fortified position, Therissos played an important role in the history of Crete. During the revolution of 1821, Latif Pasha attacked the rebels with 5,000 Turks. From Therisos, you can climb to the highest peak of the White Mountains in Pachnes at 2,452 meters altitude. From Theriso also Angelostrata sets on, leading to Anopolis in Sfakia village.

Souda Region

In the Municipal District of Aptera, in an area of outstanding beauty, visitors can tour the ancient city of Aptera. The Byzantine Monastery of Ag. Ioannis is located in the same area, as well as the 19th century castles Palekastro and Intzedin being of unique architectural beauty, while in the north east of the port of Souda, on the island of the same name, the visitor can admire "Fortezza", a Venetian fortress built in 1571 enabling Venetians to keep the bay under control.
